Realignment

It’s only been thirteen days since I launched the new look site but I’ve already decided to start fiddling about with the template. Infact in my last post I stated

I suppose if you don’t look back over old code and think of new and better ways to change something then you’re not doing your job correctly.

and that’s exactly what has happened here. However, instead of going about creating an entirely new layout, I decided to take Simplebits approach of realignment. Why not, I liked alot of elements that had been created for this design, why should I throw all of that away.

The main reason that some modification has taken place was due to me trying to be too fancy! On my own personal sites, I’ve always adopted the same philosophy “keep it simple stupid”. This philosophy was probably why the last iteration of my site lasted for nearly four years. It’s something I was told when I was very young and it has always stuck with me.

When I was coding up the last effort I decided to try and step away from my usual way of thinking. Although the colour scheme was simple, I tried to, ultimately, be too fancy when designing page layouts. My fascination with trying to manipulate variations of multiple column layouts for each page, on the 960 grid system took over and my site probably suffered from that. A different layout for every page just didn’t work, at least not the way I had went about it. Although the main content area was always located on the left hand side I believe that the end result could have affected the way that users went about using the site.

If you are a returning user to the site you will have noticed the change, the menu is still the same, the typeface is still the same, infact the majority of the elements within the template are still the same. The major element which has changed is the page layout, this time around I have decided to incorporate a three column layout on every page barring the portfolio, which as you will have guessed has stayed the same. Don’t worry, the site is still coded in html5.

I think I’ll be much happier with this layout, as I hope you will be too. Due to these new implemented changes I’ve got a few things still to sort out but I don’t envisage there being many problems with this change over.

On a side note, my next HTML5 post which was promised in the comments section from the previous blog post is still coming but has obviously been put back a little due to the template modifications which will have to be discussed. So pop back over next week if you’re interested in seeing how the pages have been coded.

Loving the new theme Jack, and I am looking forward to the new post on HTML 5; as it is something i am looking to do on my blog.

  2. I like this design. It’s obviously not a creative masterpieice. However, I have always thought that the ability to create great sites with fewer design elements is a difficult one to master. I like your content form in particular.

Good to hear from you again, if you’re really interested in the HTML5 stuff drop me an email, although I don’t have alot of knowledge in it as I’m only learning the spec, I should be able to give you a few pointers to help get you off in the right direction.

If you want I’ll also send you an email when I’ve put up the next post for you to have a read at.

Thank you, I know it’s not going to be featured on any gallery sites but I like the minimalist look, it’s something I’ve always tried to achieve on my own site.

Several sections of the site are still not up and running, most notiably the comment preview section below, and there are a few css problems to fix but I hope to have these all ticked off my list in the next few of days.

Just flicking through your own site, there are a couple of very interesting blog posts which have been bookmarked for later. On a side note, can I ask how you came across this site?

  4. I think next time I make a site, I will go for something a bit more like this. Another nice simplistic site I saw recently was: http://symphony-cms.com/

I found your site via the comments here:

  5. can I ask how you came across this site?

same way we all found it, looking for Ozzie’s son :)

That Symphony website is very nice, if you get the right images that’s pretty much half your battle won. Although the footer is hideous, I wonder what they were thinking about when they signed that off.

    @Marty

I wish, at least that way I’d get more visitors ;)

  7. if you get the right images that’s pretty much half your battle won.

Yeh :) I always say that.
